Carcassonne is a great place to visit, not only is it historic but it's very well preserved. I think it is worth a visit, for me it was the first time inside a medieval citadel like this. Be prepared to walk a lot, it is fairly large and the village also contains many medieval buildings, churches. Parking can be busy, if you can't find a spot in the parking next/close to the entrance you will have...
